Wollongong Art Gallery has a number of intriguing exhibitions on display over summer. The gallery is the largest regional art museum in Australia and admission is free.

Jelle van den Berg’s Credo (Nine Lives) exhibition began in October and will run until Sunday, February 14, 2016. The exhibition refers to a watercolour called Credo in which the artist explains his work process beliefs. The morning is for walking, drawing and watercolour, afternoons are spent lunching, sleeping and writing and evenings wiled away with dinner, painting and reading. A cat is said to have nine lives and the distinct displays show different degrees of connections between objects, the drawings and the paintings.

From mid-November through until Sunday, January 31, 2016 the gallery will be showing its 2014-2015 contemporary acquisitions from the collection. The gallery actively collects contemporary art by locally and nationally significant artists. Recent acquisitions include assemblage, collage, photography, drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture from artists including Arthur Apanski, Ben Cauchi, Vic Chapman, Ebony Eden, Michele Elliot, Bert Flugelman, James Kiwi, Mai Nguyen, Susan O’Doherty, Karen Paterson, Jacky Redgate, Val West and William Yang.

Sensorium began late November and will run until  Sunday, February 21, 2016. It is an interactive exhibition of contemporary art devised to stimulate the five senses. Artworks that can be heard, seen, touched, tasted and sniffed will allow visitors to explore heightened sensory perceptions.

Shimmer Shellwork is an exhibition curated by Tess Allas, Darrell Sibosado and Tahjee Moar which explores expanded notions of historical and contemporary shell-working traditions in Indigenous Australia. It will run from early December until Sunday, March 6, 2016 with a curators talk being held Wednesday, February 3, 2016 from 11am until 12noon.

Tess Allas and Tahjee Moar will discuss how Shimmer Shellwork establishes a new framework for viewing Indigenous shellworks, focusing on technical innovation, beauty and refinement, individual as well as community-led practice and the historical, cultural and political contexts for Indigenous shell art practice. This event is free and all are welcome.
